Plants are so versatile! They provide us with oxygen, food, medicine, fibers for cloth, plant-based dyes for textiles, and in some instances even provide shelter and a source of energy.
In this article, we are going to explore the benefits of using plant-based dyes versus chemical dies (No, that is not a typo. I wrote that on purpose to illustrate the fact that chemical dyes are toxic and negatively impact human health).
Plant-based peeps know that a healthy and wholesome life is chemical-, preservative-, and cruelty-free. Using plant-based dyes to color our clothes makes so much more sense because it’s better for us and better for the planet
.
Why are Chemical Processes (like Synthetic Dyes) so harmful?
- Synthetic chemicals are concocted in laboratories with the express purpose of killing something, preserving something, cleaning something, prettifying something, or masking the symptoms of something. They will outlive us unless we take action.
- Chemical processing is a 7 Trillion Dollar a year industry.
- Approximately 8000 chemicals are used and abused to transform raw materials into clothes, a process that involves bleaching, dyeing, scouring, sizing, and finishing the fabrics.
- Consider what has happened to human health in the industrialized world during the last half-century since synthetics were introduced. There are huge increases in adverse health conditions including cancers, infertility, fetal-damage, respiratory illnesses, skin conditions, the list is endless.
What are the Benefits of Plant-Based Dyes?
- Plant-based dyes reduce our dependence on oil and chemical-based substances.
- Using plant-based dyes reduces pollution.
- Plant-based dyes are made from plants which are a normal and fundamental part of our environment already.
Wouldn’t you rather be wearing clothing dyed with plants that are full of goodness as opposed to clothing dyed with petroleum-based toxins? Read the full article here.
Are you keen to make the switch from toxic dies (Yes, I did it again) to plant-based dyes?
We thought you would be!
Human beings who want to thrive should choose to dye naturally.
We make choices every day that affect our health and wellbeing. So often our focus is on what we put in our bodies and not what we put on our bodies, and yet our largest organ (our skin) is absorbent.
If the fabric industry was forced to list the ‘ingredients’ that go into making your clothes the way the food industry is forced to list the ingredients you consume you’d be shocked. Don’t allow them to pull the wool over your eyes any longer!
